Merry England

Photo of Austrian cocert houseOur dear friend and colleague, Sasha Starcevich shines in Piano Music by Beethoven ! Beethoven’s Piano Concertos are incredibly powerful and dynamic works, but the Fourth Concerto begins from nowhere, as if the pianist is all alone in a distant room. Majesty reigns supreme, however, in this noble and elegant work.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Robert Schumann’s birth, Sinfonia will present three movements from his joyful "Carnaval”, which was the young Schumann’s musical depiction of people who were important in his life. Composed during the happiest time of his life, the work includes a portrait of his wife-to-be, Clara, as well as a movement entitled simply "Chopin."

Also on the programme is a harbinger of spring, Franz Schubert's delightful Symphony #6 in C major. Schubert was only 20 when he fell under the spell of the famous Rossini, and this symphony is full of wit and charm and elegance of the great Italian master.

The very à propos opening work for this concert is the Overture to the Merry Wives of Windsor by another 200-year old composer, the first conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic, Otto Nicolai. What Rich Romantic Music !
